Boldo is a small evergreen, dioecious tree strictly confined to the Mediterranean-climate region of Chile. Its grayish-green, oval leaves are hard, brittle, and rough to the touch, with edges that curl slightly toward the underside.
The common name "boldo" comes from the Mapuche word foḻo. The tree is endemic to Chile, where its leaves have long been used in traditional medicine for liver and gallbladder complaints, a use that spread across Latin America.
The primary phytotherapy literature notes one distinctive sensory detail: the aromatic character of the crushed leaves recalls lemon balm and mint.
⚠ Species Identification
True boldo (Peumus boldus) is frequently confused with "false boldo" (Plectranthus ornatus), an unrelated plant sold under similar common names but with a different safety and efficacy profile.

⚠ Extract Type Matters
Boldine content isn't the only thing to check — so is ascaridole.
Boldo essential oil contains ascaridole, which is hepatotoxic in concentrated amounts. Because ascaridole has low water solubility, the European Medicines Agency's herbal monograph endorses aqueous dry extracts and infusions, but not ethanolic tinctures or fluid extracts, which tend to carry higher ascaridole levels.
Only the dried leaf of boldo is used medicinally.
