Nepeta cataria (Lamiaceae) — a downy, mint-scented perennial whose cultivation was encouraged in Charlemagne's royal gardens. Its signature iridoid, nepetalactone, can make up more than 60% of the essential oil and shows opioid-like analgesic and powerful insect-repellent activity — a striking dual identity alongside catnip's famous, unrelated effect on cats.
Nepeta cataria is an aromatic, downy perennial reaching 1 meter in height, with grayish-green, heart-shaped leaves carrying a mint-like scent. Its white flowers, speckled with purple, grow in whorls. Native to Europe and naturalized in North America, it favors dry paths and mountainous regions up to 1,500 meters in altitude.
Catnip has been known since antiquity, and its cultivation was encouraged in the royal domains of Charlemagne's era — it appears in the Capitulare de Villis, his decree governing crops grown on imperial estates. It was used to treat fevers throughout the Middle Ages.
The 18th-century Trévoux dictionary described catnip as a "very aperitive plant," suited to inducing menstruation and relieving hot flashes. Its herbal tea has a notably pleasant taste, unlike another herb historically nicknamed "cat's herb," valerian.
Various Nepeta species are used across traditional medicine as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, sedative, relaxant, hypocholesterolemic, antiasthmatic, carminative, diuretic, diaphoretic, febrifuge, and vermifuge agents, depending on their specific composition. 1

Catnip and valerian have both historically carried the nickname "herb of the cat," but they are different plants with different constituents and effects — catnip's tea also tastes notably better.
