Tincture
Origanum vulgare L. ssp vulgare — a Mediterranean culinary herb whose carvacrol-rich essential oil is one of the most broadly studied antimicrobial plant oils, and one that genuinely requires care and dilution to use safely.
Origanum vulgare is a perennial sub-shrub, up to 80cm tall, with square red stems, small opposite elliptical leaves, and pink-purple flowers gathered in panicles. It grows on dry chalky soils and coastal areas across Europe, the Middle East, and North America. Its taxonomy and chemotaxonomy are genuinely complex — many races and chemical types exist, so precision with the binomial Latin name matters.
The 13th-century herbalist Platearius described oregano as dispersing bodily humors and relieving trapped gas, clearing dampness from the gums, throat and uvula, treating asthma, and easing stomach and intestinal pain. He recommended tampons soaked in oregano powder for anal tenesmus, often caused by hemorrhoids, and a warm sitz bath to bring on delayed menstruation — though he considered a suppository of young oregano shoots more effective still.
The Greeks planted oregano on graves to bring joy to the departed. Today it is used overwhelmingly as a culinary condiment, most famously in pizza and pasta sauces, and once formed part of a five-herb "Swiss tea" formula in the 1949 French Codex pharmacopoeia alongside wormwood, betony, hyssop and thyme.
These two phenols make up the majority of oregano essential oil and are responsible for both its documented antimicrobial power and its need for careful handling.
Carvacrol and thymol together give oregano oil documented activity against Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella typhimurium, and E. coli O157:H7, among many others. [5]
Carvacrol and thymol directly activate TRPA1 and TRPV3 warmth- and irritant-sensing receptors in skin and mucous membranes — the same phenolic potency that kills microbes also produces a burning, irritant sensation on unprotected tissue. [18]
A Greek variety, Origanum vulgare var. kaliteri, contains less than 10% carvacrol and a more balanced terpene profile — a real example of how "oregano oil" potency varies significantly by chemotype and origin.
A carvacrol-rich nanoemulsion showed a potent anti-biofilm effect against Staphylococcus epidermidis, with documented potential to treat acne while helping prevent antibiotic resistance. [7]
