Whole Seed
A group of Plantago species whose mucilage-rich seed husk is one of the most widely used soluble dietary fibers in the world, studied for its bulk-forming laxative, cholesterol-lowering and glycemic-control effects.
Psyllium is the common name for several small annual herbs of the genus Plantago, cultivated for their tiny seeds, whose outer husk is rich in gel-forming mucilage. Commercial "psyllium husk" sold worldwide is overwhelmingly derived from Plantago ovata (blond psyllium, also called ispaghula), while black psyllium (Plantago afra, syn. Plantago psyllium, and the related Plantago arenaria) is used more traditionally in some regions.
⚠ Multiple Species, One Common Name
"Psyllium" commercially and in most clinical trials refers almost exclusively to Plantago ovata (blond psyllium/ispaghula) husk. Black psyllium (Plantago afra/arenaria) is botanically related but traditionally used somewhat differently. Both share the same gel-forming mucilage mechanism described in this monograph.
Psyllium seed has been used traditionally across South Asia, the Mediterranean and the Middle East as a digestive remedy, taken as macerated whole seeds swollen in water. Its name derives from the Greek word for flea, "psylla," a reference to the small size and shape of the seed.
India remains the dominant global producer of ispaghula husk, and modern clinical research through the late 20th century established a formal evidence base for its laxative, cholesterol-lowering and glycemic effects, culminating in regulatory recognition in the United States.
Psyllium isn't defined by a single active alkaloid, but by the physical, gel-forming behavior of its husk mucilage — the mechanism behind essentially every documented effect.
